Background

BMO has deep ties to Canada’s agricultural industry. Agriculture represents one of the largest portfolios of the bank and BMO has remained committed to providing the best agriculture products in the market to its customers, while providing a wealth of knowledge and experience to help grow and sustain the industry.

For over 20 years, BMO has honoured farming families in Southern Manitoba who take an innovative approach to growing their business, demonstrate a commitment to traditional western values and maintain an exceptional standard of sustainability. Twelve years ago, the program expanded to celebrate families in the Southwestern Ontario area.

For its fourth year, BMO and the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba will honour three farm families in the province for their commitment to agriculture and the community during the 2024 Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, which runs March 25 – 30, 2024.

Selection Criteria

Actively involved in agriculture and community
Agriculture must provide a major source of income
Some family members reside on farm and are active in primary agriculture

Who is able to nominate?

Nominations are open to the general public. Three families will be selected by a committee of Royal Manitoba Fair executive. The deadline to submit nominations is January 30, 2024.

Awards Ceremony

As our special guests, families will be honoured at the BMO Farm Family Award ceremony, held in conjunction with the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. The families honoured will have the opportunity to meet with representations from BMO Bank of Montreal, local government officials and board members from the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba.

Benefits for BMO Manitoba Farm Family Award Recipient

Each family member will receive free admission into the Fair as well as an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience hosted by BMO and the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.

Professional photographs from the ceremony will be available as an online gallery for families to download. In addition, as part of the BMO Farm Family Award tradition, each family will be presented with a personalized farm plaque.

Is this a generational farm – passing on the family operation from generation to generation? What is the historical background of the family? Have they gone above and beyond to preserve and promote rural family values? Do family members demonstrate a strong work ethic and are they role models to each other and their peers? Has the family made an outstanding contribution to the Manitoba Agriculture sector by combining the ideals and traditions of the past with advanced agri-business practices?(Required)

Are they focused on the future – demonstrating sustainment and progressive agricultural management practices? Have they demonstrated versatility and adaptability in management of their farm?

Does the family demonstrate land stewardship?(Required)

Do they employ environmental practices (ex: wildlife habitat retention, moisture conservation, erosion reduction etc.)?
